Varathron is a Greek black metal band formed in 1988 in Ioannina by vocalist Stefan Necroabyssious. Alongside Rotting Christ and Necromantia, the band is regarded as one of the founders of the Hellenic black metal movement. Varathron's trademark sound is built around mid-paced riffs, dark occult atmospheres, melodic passages and an epic approach. Conceptually and lyrically, the band is strictly dedicated to ancient occult philosophy, Hellenic and Mesopotamian mysticism, Satanism, dark magic, and ancient rituals. Key releases include His Majesty at the Swamp (1993), Walpurgisnacht (1995), Crowsreign (2004), Untrodden Corridors of Hades (2014), Patriarchs of Evil (2018) and The Crimson Temple (2023).
