The 3rd And The Mortal is a Norwegian band formed in Trondheim in 1992. The outfit is widely recognized as a pioneering force behind the female-fronted atmospheric metal movement, profoundly influencing the development of gothic and doom metal in the 1990s (including acts like Nightwish, Theatre of Tragedy, and The Gathering). Their early work combined heavy guitar riffs, dark melodies and atmospheric female vocals. They gained particular recognition with their debut album Tears Laid in Earth (1994), an influential release in the development of the genre. In later years, The 3rd And The Mortal explored progressive and avant-garde elements, gradually moving away from their traditional metal sound.
