Manilla Road is a band from Wichita, founded by guitarist and vocalist Mark “The Shark” Shelton. Their style is epic heavy metal, marked by melodic guitar work, atmospheric lyrics, and distinctive vocals. Early albums Invasion (1980) and Metal (1982) laid the foundation, while Crystal Logic (1983) became their breakthrough and a genre classic. Later releases such as Open the Gates (1985), The Deluge (1986), and Mystification (1987) cemented their reputation as one of the most influential underground metal bands. After a hiatus in the 1990s, Manilla Road returned in the 2000s, continuing to release albums and perform until Shelton’s passing in 2018. The band remains a symbol of underground dedication and pure love for heavy metal.
