Asphyx is a Dutch death metal band with a strong doom metal influence, formed in 1987 in the Netherlands. The band became one of the most distinctive acts in European death metal, developing a trademark sound built around crushing, slow doom-laden riffs, brutal vocals and a dark atmosphere. Conceptually and lyrically, the band focuses on themes of warfare, death, torture, religious decay, historical battles, and the apocalypse. Their debut album The Rack (1991) and its follow-up Last One on Earth (1992) are regarded as genre classics. After an extended hiatus in the early 2000s, Asphyx reunited in 2007 and continued their career with acclaimed releases including Death...The Brutal Way (2009), Deathhammer (2012), Incoming Death (2016) and Necroceros (2021).
