Ancient is a Norwegian melodic and atmospheric black metal band formed in 1992 in Bergen, Norway by Aphazel. Initially performing a raw and traditional form of black metal, the band gradually developed a distinctive sound enriched with melodic guitar work, atmospheric keyboards and gothic influences. As part of the second wave of Norwegian black metal, Ancient gained international recognition for combining dark, epic atmospheres with memorable melodies. Their most significant releases include Svartalvheim (1994), Trolltaar (1995), The Cainian Chronicle (1996), Mad Grandiose Bloodfiends (1997), The Halls of Eternity (1999) and Back to the Land of the Dead (2016).
